Happy Wednesday Loves!
After 14 hours, we have officially landed in Switzerland! This is our first stop on our trip and we are so excited to be here! Actually, as I write this, we are sitting on the train on our way to Lucerene! The area is an absolute dream. Deciding to not cancel this trip was probably the best thing we could have done.
Since we are traveling internationally, I figured it was the perfect time to share with you all what I pack in my carry on when traveling abroad! I’m also sharing my tips for avoiding Jet Lag! Side note – Colton never follows my steps and is currently exhausted sitting next to me lol.
International Flight Essentials
- A Cozy Cardigan: You never know how hot to cold a plane is going to be but if a plane is cold, you’re going to be super thankful you have one! Then if it is warm, it’s super easy to take off!
- Carry-On Luggage: Even when I check a bag, I always carry on at least one piece of luggage. I’ll pack an extra pair of clothes in it, just in case my checked bag gets lost. It’s also where I keep all of my valuables. Nobody has time for items being broken into or stolen during checking.
- Eye Mask: Depending on the flight, I really try and get my sleep. Sleep masks are a must for really blocking out all of the light. Plus, this fuzzy one is so cute!
- Cosmetic Case: No matter what, I always pack a small cosmetic case in my purse. It holds my facial masks, lotion, Advil, and basically anything that I will need during the flight. It keeps everything organized and fits perfectly in my tote.
- Noise Canceling Headphones: I never thought of these as a necessity, until I wore Colton’s and they changed my life. Flights are loud and even if you are just wanting to take a nap, these really cancel out everything.
- A Good Book: Even though almost all international flights have TV’s to watch, I personally like to take time to disconnect. Especially if I am trying to sleep. I’ll read to help wind down and really relax. I am currently reading this book and it is absolutely hysterical. My friend Laurel introduced me to it and I cannot put it down.
- Sneakers: Normally if we fly, I do not mind wearing heels, but if we are traveling abroad, sneakers are my shoe of choice. There is usually more walking and more luggage, so it’s much more practical.
- Rose Mist: Perfect for refreshing and hydrating your face during the flight. After 7 hours plus, you will be so happy you have it. I swear I spray mine at least every hour and it makes me feel so much better.
- Cozy Socks: Because once again, you never know how cold your plane will be!
- Phone Charger: We always keep extra phone chargers in our carry ons. There is nothing worse than landing and not having a charged phone.
- Cute Passport Case: I picked up this super cute passport holder a few weeks ago! Even though it is kind of ironic since we “didn’t”, I still wanted to use it! Instead of bringing my wallet, I just transfer everything into a passport holder to save room in my purse.
- Hand Lotion: Another necessity during a long flight. I’m telling ya’ll, dry skin and dehydration are my worst enemies. Mid flight I will put lotion literally all over me. This Aveda lotion is absolutely incredible. I even convinced Colton to put some on and he loved it as well.
- Face Lotion: A nice hydrating face lotion is also a must! I’m very particular about what I put on my face and Cauadelie is always trust worthy.
- Sheet Mask: I’m just going to start by saying that I have zero shame in wearing a hydrating sheet mask mid flight. People probably walk by me and think I’m crazy but I don’t care because my skin feels so much better after wearing one. I will leave it on for over an hour, lay back and pass out. This one is amazing because it has little slips that go on your ears so that it won’t slip off.
- Leggings: On international flights, leggings are my pants of choice! They are warm but are way more comfortable than jeans. This pair is seriously the best because they are high-waisted with a thick band.
- Sunglasses: Since I do not wear a ton of makeup when flying (like none), I always make sure I have a pair of sunglasses handy for when we arrive.
- Laptop: Just because I am a workaholic and will take anytime to work on the plane.
- Fresh Lip Balm: I love this lip balm because it is super hydrating but it also gives you a little bit of pigment.
- An Oversized Tote: These are my preferred bag to carry on flights! My long champ literally fits everything on this list. It goes with everything, it’s lightweight and it is easy to carry.
Ways To Avoid Jet Lag
- Forget what time it is at home: Before traveling or taking off, the first thing I do is look at what time it is where I am going. I completely ignore my time zone and prepare myself to be on theirs. If its night time, I’m going to make myself go to sleep. If it’s the middle of the day there, I am going to do everything in me to not pass out.
- Resist Alcohol: This is where Colton and I are very different. When we fly internationally, let’s just say that Colton likes to get his money’s worth. Me on the other hand, I know that alcohol is going to (a) dehydrate me (b) make me fall asleep (c) make me foggy upon arrival. Of course, I’ll have a glass of champagne when taking off but I really make the effort to limit myself.
- Drink Water: Water is the key to everything. Make sure you are drinking more water than you think you can handle. Think about how dehydrated your body gets while flying for 10+ hours. If you can drink enough water before arrival, you will feel nourished, have energy and not feel like a foggy mess.
- Resist Taking a Nap Upon Arrival: This is another huge one, one of which Colton and I are very different. Sometimes I joke that he is trying to be jet-lagged lol, but none-the-less, if you can avoid taking a nap once you have reached your location then you will be fine the rest of your trip. Remember when I said you needed to forget what time it is a home? Well, this is where it comes into play the most. Do everything in your power not to sleep until it is the appropriate time to do so. Take a cold shower or do a quick workout, just don’t sleep in the car or go to the hotel for a nap. Everything to keep your mind and body going.
- Have a meal: It’s all about time-zones so it is important to have a meal immediately upon arrival that corresponds with that time zone. If you land in the morning, have breakfast. If it’s in the evening, have dinner.
What are your traveling tips?? I would love to add to this list!
